Examine surfaces to be coated and report to the Architect any conditions that adversely affect the appearance or performance of the Blends system and that cannot be put into acceptable conditions by specified surface preparations. B. Do not proceed with surface preparation and Blends application until the surface is acceptable or authorization to proceed is given by the Architect. C. Verify correct basecoat color and flake blend by checking against information color card enclosed with flakes. 3.2 Surface Preparation: A. General: 1. Prior to surface preparation, thoroughly clean all surfaces involved. 2. All surfaces shall be clean, dry and adequately protected from dampness. Surfaces shall be smooth, even, true to plane and free of any foreign materials that would adversely affect adhesion or appearance of applied coating. 3. Mildew shall be removed and neutralized. B. New sheetrock: 1. Brush surface with a broom and wipe with a damp rag to remove excess powder from sanding. 2. Prime surface with BLENDS BONDING PRIMER. Stained surfaces should be primed with BLENDS UNIVERSAL PRIMER. Allow a minimum of two hours for drying. C. Unpainted surfaces: 1. Ceramic tile, pvc plastic or other glossy surfaces: a. Clean and Degrease b. Sand lightly c. Apply a coat of BLENDS BONDING PRIMER. Do not work back into areas that have started to set up. Allow minimum of three hours for drying. Note: Do a test area of any questionable substrate before proceeding. 2. Wood: a. Caulk nail heads, siding joints and around framing. b. Spot-prime all knots with pigmented shellac and follow with one coat of BLENDS BONDING PRIMER 3. Masonry: a. Must be cured, cleaned and firm. b. Remove any release agents. c. Prime with high quality PVA block fill primer. 4. Galvanized metal: a. Wash with alcohol or VM&P Naphtha and allow to dry. 5. Vinyl wallcovering: a. Remove all wallcovering, wash wall thoroughly to remove adhesive, allow to dry and then prime and coat as required Note: If the wallcovering is firmly attached with tight seams it may be possible to coat over it. Thoroughly wash the surface and prime with BLENDS BONDING PRIMER. Do a test area before proceeding to determine suitability. D. Previously painted surfaces: 1. General: a. Remove all loose paint, dirt, and chalk with a scraper and a strong detergent solution. Remove all zinc salt deposits with TSP. Remove mildew by scrubbing with a mixture of one quart liquid household bleach to three quarts water. CAUTION: DO NOT ADD DETERGENTS OR AMMONIA TO BLEACH-WATER MIXTURES! Wear protective glasses or goggles and waterproof gloves. Quickly wash skin that comes into contact with the mixture. Rinse with clean water and allow to dry thoroughly. Stained surfaces should be spot primed with BLENDS UNIVERSAL PRIMER. Allow a minimum of two hours for drying. 2. Masonry: a. Brush clean all powdery, peeling, or chalky paint. b. Spot-prime with BLENDS BONDING PRIMER. 3.3 Application: A. General: 1. Carefully follow manufacturer's recommendations and instructions regarding special coating product so as to provide the best quality work. 2. Apply basecoat according to specification sheet to achieve uniform thickness. Apply to match project mock-up specified pattern(s) with manufacturer-specified equipment. 3. Apply basecoat using a ½” to 1" nap roller to apply a wet film at 10mil thick. It will not be necessary to mask any areas that do not receive the color flake system if the applicators cut in all areas using a brush with care. If necessary, material being cut in by brush may be thinned with clean water up to 5%. Blow the color flakes into the basecoat while it is wet and open, utilizing manufacturer's approved equipment at 20 to 25 psi, and using circular motions until the basecoat is completely covered. Note: you can not apply too many flakes as the excess will not adhere to anything except the wet basecoat. Make sure that a wet area is maintained as the base crew proceeds. Temperature and humidity influence the open time. Care should be taken that this wet area does not dry enough to lift when the adjacent area is rolled. The flake applicator should work in areas approximately 25/30 sq. ft (on an 8' high wall) you should blow a section about 3'to 4' wide, keeping at least 1 foot away from the last rolled area. The flakes should be blown from about 36" to 40" from the wall; any closer will result in flakes bouncing off the wall causing more clean-up. It is suggested to use paper on the floor along the wall 36" to 54" wide, to catch the excess flakes for re-use. "Box" containers of basecoat as work proceeds to assure color continuity. 4. Apply coatings under adequate illumination. 5. Allow to dry thoroughly - minimum 4 hours. 6. Brush excess flakes from wall surface. If a very smooth finish is desired, the surface may be scraped with a joint knife and/or sanded before brushing. 7. Apply topcoat, using a short nap roller, approximately 4mil thick to an even, smooth finish, ensuring the absence of sags, holidays, lap marks, air bubbles and pinholes. 8. Should any coat of product be deemed unsatisfactory, it shall be properly prepared and additional coats applied as necessary until satisfactory finish is achieved. 3.4 Inspection: A. Request acceptance of each area before starting new areas. B. Touch-up and repair all work that is not acceptable to the Architect and request final acceptance. 3.5 Cleaning: A. Equipment: 1. Clean tools with warm water immediately after use - wipe gun with dry cloth to remove any foreign materials. B. Job Site: 1. Remove basecoat spatters from glass, plumbing fixtures, and adjoining surface. 2. Repair any damage to coatings or surface caused by cleanup activities. Remove debris from job site and leave storage area clean. 12.02.08
